From 2001 until 2007 Gavin was employed as a Building Surveyor with the National Trust for Scotland. During this time he undertook many surveys and inspections of historic buildings; prepared drawings and specifications for projects of repair, maintenance, refurbishment & conservation and acted as contract administrator for the works. He also acted as lead consultant to teams of other building professionals and project managed major schemes of repair.

Prior to this Gavin worked for the Nàdair Trust where he coordinated 20 partner groups in the successful development of 32 heritage based projects for Scotland’s Argyll islands. Individual projects included: the consolidation of historic chapels on Tiree and the renovation of a croft house on Lismore.

From 1998 to 1999 Gavin was employed by Friends of the Earth Scotland as their European Project Manager where he coordinated the research and campaigning work of seven partner groups around Europe in the subject of the sustainable use of natural resources.

Before this Gavin was, for 11 years, a Building Surveyor with Post Office Property Holdings based in Edinburgh with responsibility for post office buildings over a large part of Scotland and Northern Ireland. Throughout this period Gavin gained experience of managing a wide range of maintenance, refurbishment and new construction projects of value £2.5k to £15m. Much experience was also gained of preparing specifications, procuring building works and contract administration.
